The University of Illinois Pollinatarium is the first free-standing science center in the nation devoted to flowering plants and their pollinators. On our trip to the Pollinatarium we will learn about pollinators and the BeeSpotter project, a joint project between the MSTE Office with the Department of Entomology for the past 3 years.
Join us for our MSTE Friday Lunch with Peter Braunfeld as he talks about numerals. What do the ordinary English names for numbers like one, two, three, hundred, thousand, etc. (and those of other languages) reveal about the history of our understanding of numbers?
Join MSTE,the Office for Math, Science, and Technology for Education, for the Friday Lunch series. Quinn Baetz will discuss various jobs he has had and how he got involved with MSTE. He will go over some of the interesting projects he has done at the University, along with the work done at MSTE. Quinn will end by talking about his future and what he will be doing at HP Palm.
Avigail Snir will join the MSTE Friday Lunch group to discuss "What Etoys Could Bring to STEM Education" using examples from EtoysIllinois.org.
Jana and George will share the discussions theyre having with the Math 199 students surrounding "The box problem".
The conversations have led them to wonder about which math concepts all students need to know, and, assuming such a concept, how a teacher could get all students to learn it.
Kathleen Harness will give an overview of the Etoys programming language and the EtoysIllinois.org website.
George Reese will lead a discussion with the group on "Math Workshops for Teachers."
