Weaknesses in Preservice Teacher’s Computational Skills and Understandings

To assess students’ computational skills, they administered pretests the first day of class on the basic addition facts, multiplication facts and computational facility on the whole numbers, fractions, decimals and integers. The results they found were astonishing and worse than ever before, and they have found that they get worse each succeeding semester.

Date:

Friday, November 2, 2018 - 12:00

RSVP

November 2, 2018

We're sorry, but RSVPs for this event are closed. Amar will present what he thinks can be done about it, to those who could do something to help.

STEM Outreach with Computational Thinking & MatheMagic

But if done successfully, it can bring great benefits to the students now, and in the future. In this talk, Hon-Wai will discuss how he uses fun problems and activities to get students to unconsciously think about computational thinking. Some of these examples include MatheMagic, solving problems with graph coloring, CS UnPlugged activities (sorting networks, parity-based-puzzles, etc), creative use of induction, zero-knowledge proofs, pancake flipping problems.

Date:

Friday, December 11, 2015 - 12:00

RSVP

December 11, 2015

We're sorry, but RSVPs for this event are closed.
Taking High School Level Math in College: Issues, Trends, and Novel Approaches

Georg Cantor and the Idea of Infinity

Educators are always talking about "what mathematicians really do." Fact is, they do lots of very different things, most of which require technical vocabulary and a lot of mathematical background

Around 1890, Georg Cantor invents a theory of infinite sets and shocks the mathematical world. Luckily, this theory is not only genuinely elegant, but doesn't require much background. So, it's a wonderful example for both high school teachers and students to show at least what some mathematicians do or have done.

Date:

Friday, October 31, 2014 - 12:00

RSVP

October 31, 2014

We're sorry, but RSVPs for this event are closed.
The Illinois Geometry Lab

The Illinois Geometry Lab is primarily a research organization that creates opportunities for undergraduates to work with graduate students and professors on cutting edge research that requires or benefits from visualization. From an engagement standpoint, our main focus is extension. We like to take what we develop in the lab, both skills and content, and make it accessible to our community.

Date:

Friday, February 15, 2013 - 12:00

RSVP

February 15, 2013

We're sorry, but RSVPs for this event are closed.
